Sound performance
During her residency, Annelieke delves into her mother’s cassette archive: a collection of home recordings, concerts, and conversations with fortune tellers. Her mother, a pianist, inherited the practice of recording from her own father. Through a hauntological approach, Annelieke traces echoes across her family timeline, exploring generational transmission and the fragile boundaries between memory and sanity.
When the daughter of a performing musician looks at her mother — the first person ever to see her — a hall of mirrors unfolds.
In one recording, her mother — at the same age Annelieke is now — speaks with a fortune teller: an elderly woman with traditional visions of a woman’s future. This tape forms a thread through the navigation of the archive: a generational mirror in which past, present, and future collapse, while the archive enters into conversation with itself.
Is a recording a performance for the future?
How can an archive be performed in order to invoke it?
Is the performer of the archive a medium themselves?
Past performances are nested within one another, echoing into the present like a matryoshka. Is archiving a form of care? And does the past contain clues to the future?
For a sonic collaboration, Annelieke invites sound artist Baz Laarakkers into her research. Together, they dive into recordings of performing arts and explore different ways of performing the archive.
